WHD 2011 Commemorated: Kenyans urged to fight drug resistance
Nairobi, Kenya 7th April 2011 -- Kenya joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Health Day under the theme “Combating Anti-Microbial Resistance”. The day observed at the Riruta Health Centre, Dagoretti in Nairobi was presided over by the Director, Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sharif Shaanaz and attended by WHO Country Representative (WR/Kenya), Dr. Abdoulie Jack among other dignitaries and partners.
Speaking at the function, the WR, Dr. Abdoulie Jack, cited the problem of drug resistance in the African region especially in the areas of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. Dr. Jack emphasized on the need for urgent and concerted efforts in fighting drug resistance to ensure the preservation of existing life-saving drugs, minimize the high cost of disease treatment and greater risk of death. He advised the country on the importance of a strengthened surveillance system as a primary strategy for tracking emerging drug resistance in the population
